Common Name: Matico
Botanical Name: Piper Aduncum
Origin: South America
Matico hails from the depths of the Amazon rainforest. A tropical shrub-like tree, matico can grow up to 23 feet tall and its leaves, which resemble lances, can grow up to 8 inches long. The plant, rumor has it, was named after an injured Spanish soldier who applied the leaves to a wound he suffered to expedite healing.
As stated above, matico has a rich history as a plant that promotes healing. The indigenous people of South America are believed to use matico in a variety of ways.
Matico is a good source of plant chemicals including flavonoids, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes, and several others. These plant chemicals are rare, making matico one of the few sources to offer them in a single source.
